- Body Color The predominant basic color of the pearl.
- Overtone The one or more colors that overlie the body color. On black pearls these colors are usually easiest to see in the lighter areas of the pearl. On white pearls they are easier to see in the darker areas.
- Iridescence A play of lustrous colors. They may be like those of the rainbow, or they may be a subtle combination of colors such as pink, blue, green and silver. The colors of the pearls change when you move them in your hand.
Pearl color does affect the price of pearls. This affection is more prominent on saltwater pearl than on freshwater pearl. It differs from type to type. Even pearls in a same category have quite different price level just because of their color. The presence of overtone color and iridescence can make pearl more valuable. However, pearl jewelry is a decoration to inspire beauty of wearer. It is better to choose suitable one instead of precious one. Your primary concern should be what looks best on you.
Surface imperfections to avoid when choosing pearls1. Judge the color of pearls against a non-reflective white background. Pearls not only reflect the color of the background, they also absorb it. Afterwards, place the pearls on your hand or around your neck to see how they look on you.
2. Take into consideration the lighting. If possible look at the pearls under different types of light sources-daylight near a window, fluorescent, and incandescent (light bulbs). You’ll probably be wearing the pearls under a variety of light sources.
3. it’s a lot easier to compare color than to remember it. If possible, wear or take along some comparison pearls. Otherwise, compare the color to other pearls in the store. Even using white and cream-colored papers as color references is better than relying on color memory.
4. When pearl strands are exactly adjacent, their color may seem to bleed from one strand to another. Therefore, also compare them slightly separated from each other.
5. Every now and then, look away from the pearls at other colors and objects. When you focus on one color too long, your perception of it becomes distorted.
6. Consider how evenly distributed the color is on the pearls, especially if it’s one major pearl on a ring or pendant. A uniform color is more highly valued than a blotchy one.
7. If you are trying to decide between white and pink pearls of the same quality but the pink pearls cost more. Look in a few of the drill holes with a 10-power magnifier. If you can see red or pink stains on the nacre layer or a pink line between the nacre and the nucleus, they are dyed. Seeing positive indications of dye may influence your decision. By the way, even if you don’t see evidence of dye, the pearls may still be dyed.
The Princess Cut Diamond
The princess cut diamond was developed in the 1960s. This square diamond makes use of the brilliant style of diamond cutting rather than traditional step-cut configurations of traditional squares such as the emerald. The extra faceting causes the princess to have more natural diamond brilliance and scintillation. The enhanced performance hides inclusions and makes color less noticeable. It is, in effect, a square version of the round brilliant, technically recognized as a square modified brilliant cut.

Princess Cut Diamond Assessment
Unlike round diamonds (or Hearts & Arrows diamonds), the performance of fancy shape diamonds cannot be predicted using only proportions or static reflector photography. Experienced sellers can recommend a favored range of parameters, and it is possible to make broad conclusions from photography and reflector images, but these shapes must be seen live for decisive evaluation. This is why no lab awarded a cut grade for the princess diamond until 2005, when the American Gem Society introduced the industry’s first-ever scientific cut grade based on actual light performance. For this reason it is imperative to work with an expert you trust on princess cut diamond selection.
Configurations
Several diamond configurations exist for the princess. The main differences are in pavilion construction, where 2, 3 or 4 ‘chevrons’ can be seen. As diamond facets get smaller, broad dispersion is reduced in favor of smaller, rapid scintillation. When choosing a princess cut diamond it is prudent to keep size and construction in mind to arrive at the balance of performance qualities you desire.

Princess Cut Diamond Corners
Any sharp point on a square diamond or other gemstone is vulnerable. For this reason the setting process is critical with princess cuts and should be done by a skilled professional worthy of trust. Princess cut diamond points can be set into pre-cut ‘seats’ in the setting. Some manufacturers ‘chamfer’ the corners slightly and others are producing ‘clipped-corners’ to improve the diamond’s durability.
For square diamonds that have sharp corners or points, chamfering is allowed to the extent that it improves durability without obviously changing the shape of the stone.
Princess Cut Diamond History
The forerunner of the princess cut diamond was the Barion cut diamond, developed by Basil Watermeyer of South Africa (nicknamed after his wife Marion). The term princess cut was previously applied to what is now known as the profile cut, developed in 1961, but the profile cut was used for very flat diamonds and differs from the modern princess.

Every piece of diamond rough is different and some pieces will finish best as a shape other than round. The diamond cutter makes decisions based on what will make the most attractive diamond while allowing most yield from the rough. The princess cut diamond works well with steep rough and much of the material best suited for square shapes may finish better as a princess, rather than a square baguette or emerald cut.

Natural Pearls
Natural pearls are created without any intervention from man when a tiny irritant finds its way into a mollusk. This causes the animal to secrete a substance to encapsulate the intruder in order to reduce the irritation. The result can be quite magical as the process continues over time to produce a lustrous spherical gem. Natural pearls of any significant size are extremely rare and are almost nonexistent in the market today.
Cultured Pearls
Cultured pearls are produced by the mollusk in exactly the same way as natural pearls, except that the irritant or nucleus is specially prepared and surgically implanted. Fortunately, the modern industry of pearl cultivation which began in the late 1800’s is thriving today, making beautiful pearls both available and affordable. Cultured pearls are produced in a variety of different mollusks in both saltwater and freshwater.
The process of growing a cultured pearl is also referred to as pearl cultivation or pearl “farming” in that large areas of controlled natural waters are utilized for the production of quantities of pearls after carefully planting “seeds” or nuclei in a large number of mollusks. The implantation of nuclei is done in a surgical fashion and the mollusks are nurtured carefully though the growing period. Different varieties of mollusk produce very different types of pearls and are cultivated using a wide variety of techniques. Saltwater pearls are nucleated with polished round beads made from a freshwater clam found in certain American rivers.
Like traditional farms, the pearl crop is subject to fluctuations in water and weather conditions and the results of any given harvest are uncertain, and the market fluctuates accordingly.
Types of Cultured Pearls
The most important types of pearls are the Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian Black, and freshwater.
Akoya Pearls
Produced by the Pinctada Fucata oyster, the akoya is cultivated in the seas of Japan and China and yields a high percentage of spherical pearls from 2-9mm. A single Akoya can produce as many as 5 individual pearls in 8-24 months, but can only be nucleated once.
South Sea Pearls
Produced by the Pinctada Maxima oyster, South Sea pearls are grown mainly in Australia, Indonesia and the Phillippines. Two varieties of this oyster, gold lipped and silver lipped, account for the characteristic gold and silver colors of these cultured pearls. Australian pearls grow the biggest and range between 10-15mm, with an average size of 13mm. A South Sea oyster can produce only a single pearl in 18-24 months, but can be nucleated up to 3 times.
Tahitian Pearls
Produced by the Pinctada Margaritifera, a black lipped oyster, Tahitian pearls exhibit a variety of unusual colors including the exotic Tahitian Black. They range in size from 8-14mm with an average size of 9.5mm. A Tahitian oyster can produce only a single pearl in 22-26 months, but can be nucleated up to 4 times.
Freshwater Pearls
The mollusks that produce freshwater pearls are called mussels and are grown in rivers, lakes and ponds. There are many species of mussels that produce freshwater pearls, but the main producer is Hyriopsis Cumingi. It is called “triangle shell” in its native China, which produces the majority of the world’s cultured freshwater pearls. These mussels can produce up to 50 individual pearls and can be nucleated up to two times. Freshwater pearl cultivation is unique in that it involves nucleation with soft tissue rather than a hard bead.
