Citrine, a name derived from the French word citron meaning yellow, starts life as amethyst or smoky quartz before being heated to attain the lemon, gold and russet shades for which it is known.

Because of its low, low price and super-abundance, this quartz commonly serves as a poor man’s topaz and golden sapphire. But it wasn’t always like that. Until citrine’s appearance in quantity starting in the 1830s, it was rare and expensive. Indeed, its widespread use in jewelry dates from the late 19th century.

When asked what was the greatest triumph of his career, Jahangar, Mughal ruler of India from 1605 to 1625, answered, the purchase of the 352-carat Timur ruby in 1612.

There’s just one small flaw in this accomplishment – the ruby was a spinel.

Thankfully for the jeweler who sold the potentate that ruby, the misidentification wasn’t discovered until centuries later when the stone had become a part of the crown jewels of England.

The Timur ruby isn’t the only legendary ruby that turned out to be a spinel. Empress Catherine II of the Russia had what she thought was a 414-carat uncut ruby set in her crown. It was a spinel. The 170-carat Black Prince’s ruby in the front of the royal crown of England was also a spinel.

And so it goes. Every mammoth ruby of antiquity is a spinel.

No wonder red spinel was long called “balas ruby,” a reference to Balascia, the earliest-known source for this ruby look-alike on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.

So if every great ruby of antiquity is, in reality, a spinel, why isn’t this gem more popular?

No one really knows why. Spinel is rarer than ruby but because of its lesser status also far less expensive. It often looks exactly like ruby, although experts will tell you it has more orange. Perhaps the fact that cheap synthetic spinels have been used in class and signet rings for decades makes it impossible for consumers to take it as seriously as it deserves. Whatever the reason, spinel is an undervalued, underappreciated gem that, to our eyes, rivals ruby in beauty.

With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, its got great durability to boot. Burma, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are the main sources of spinel today – just as they’ve been for centuries.

Emerald played as much a role in the conquest of the New World as gold. Once it was obtained in trade by the Spanish explorer Pedrarias on the north coast of Colombia in 1514, every subsequent Spanish explorer had this grass-green beryl high up on his list of booty and plunder.

Ever since, Colombia has remained the world’s most celebrated source of emerald. But, then again, it was only the second known source.  From 3500 B.C. until the 16th century, Egypt had been the sole source of this gem.

Today, ironically, it produces no emerald whatsoever.But even if it did,it would be no rival to any of the world’s other providers of emerald – mainly – in addition to Colombia, Zambia and Brazil. Surviving Egyptian stones are too pale and included – although they were known to be Cleopatra’s, the legendary queen who ascended to the throne in 51 B.C., favorite gem.

In recent years, emerald has been plagued with controversy involving the frequent use of oils, resins and other fillers to mask the numerous small fissures that usually dot this gem. While such enhancement may have been preformed for centuries, the public has only become aware of it in the last decade – and it has not reacted well.

Jewelers have not helped matters any by not disclosing this fact of life, although it is required by the Federal Trade Commission.

The main problem with most emerald enhancements is that they unstable and prone to dehydration over time. As this happens, stones become increasingly unattractive. The logical answer would be to develop a permanent enhancement. But while such a treatment is now available, ignorance keeps the trade from embracing it.

So the emerald market lingers in limbo -the victim of its own fear and misunderstanding of emerald reality.
